HP support has just confirmed that HP do not support upgrades to SSD if the PC in question was originally supplied with a HDD.
Since SATA HDD and SSD are allegedly SATA compliant, this would indicate HP is not building their PCs to the SATA standard.
I am currently exploring this with Consumer Groups and SSD manufacturers. Will let you know the outcome.

An update for anyone who trips over this post in a year or so's time:
The Crucial MX500 SATA III SSD did NOT work
The Samsung 870 EVO SATA III SSD did NOT work
The WDC Blue SATA III SSD DID work
Assumption and HP Support feedback is that HP do NOT support SSDs in PCs that are not initially provided with SSDs. The follow-on assumption, since Cruscial, Samsung and WDC ALL build their SSDs to the SATA standard is that HP computers are NOT SATA compliant. Now confirmed by 2 people in Australia and anecdotally more than 100 people around the World.
Buying an HP computer? Caveat Emptor!!
