HP Pavilion won't boot up (+heatsink?)

Operating System: Microsoft Windows Vista
Hello! So, when I boot up my computer, it won't display anything. Instead, it makes a whirring fan sound that gradually gets more intense (though, strangely enough, when not hooked up to the monitor the whirring stays at a consistent volume). I removed the cover and turned it on and both fans (the one over the heat sink and the one that blows out the back) are both spinning. I recently had someone clean the dust out of it and he removed the fan from the heatsink, but when he was putting it back on the screws on all four corners wouldn't fit in at the same time, so only two are screwed in. Could that be something...? And the light for the power button doesn't light up either...

Any help is appreciated!

Hi @Cyanide_Smiles,

Thank you for stopping by the HP forums.  A Good day to you. Smiley Happy I read the post regarding requiring assistance I will be delighted to assist you with this.

Great description of the issue before posting. Kudos to you on that score. Smiley Happy You are an important HP customer and it is paramount to assist you here. I also take it as a privilege to share this platform with you. Smiley Happy

For starters, I would require more information to assist you better?

  • Did this happen after a software or app update?
  • Was there a power outage or surge before this happened?
  • Please let me know the complete model# of the unit.

I gathered that this is a desktop computer as you hook it up to a monitor.

Please try a hard reset from this link: http://support.hp.com/za-en/document/c01463028

and check if this resolves the issue. If it does not, then it is a hardware issue with the computer.

Please contact a local Best Buy or Staples technician to get the computer serviced.

This link is also a useful link: http://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c00899280 Please try the prescribed steps from this link as well which is relevant to your current situation.
