Hard drive quick test failed. Do I need a new hard drive and how can I get a windows recovery disc?

PC is out of warranty and I know very little about PCs. I did some troubleshooting steps I found online and was able to run a hard drive quick test and it failed. It gave me a failure id, but I’m not sure what that means. It seems like I need a new hard drive. I checked connections and everything is tight. I am ok with buying a new hard drive, but this PC is less than 2 years old and doesn’t get much use. Mostly just browsing the internet and some crafting projects for my wife. Right now the PC freezes at start up with a black screen stating “fixing (d:)”. It gets to 99% and just sits there. Once I replace the hard drive I believe I need a windows recovery disc but I can’t get the PC on to create one. Please help. I’m lost at this point.

Yes, the hard drive needs to be replaced and you will need a recovery download.  Your PC is one that has  support of the HP Cloud Recovery found here:

Unfortunately you will need a working PC to make the recovery media.  The same criteria if you make the Windows 10 re-installation media found here:


Fortunately, you can use someone else's computer to make either one of those choices.
