How do I become the admin. on, my desktop?

My printer quit working and it's a brother printer. I called the company, and they told me I need to be the admin. on my computer so I can add a port. It was working but I get messages like your printer isn't turned on when it is, it worked before. I don't know why I need to add a port but, I need my printer working ASAP. Can anyone advise me please.
