Pavilion p6760uk
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi, my hp pavillion p6760uk won't power on. It worked yesterday perfectly fine. I put an SSD in and now it won't power on with the new drive or the original HDD.

I get a green LED on the back of the PSU when I plug a power cable in to it. When I press the power button The CPU fan spins for less than a second and the green PSU LED goes out and fan doesn't spin.  I have unplugged all the cables, RAM, CMOS battery etc from the motherboard and made sure they're all reseated correctly. I have also tested the power supply via the paperclip method which powers on  the PSU and the fan spins, but when I plug the PSU power connectors and power button cable back in to the motherboard, the same thing happens.

Thank you in advance for any help.

A quick power shutdown is an indication of a short in the motherboard or power cables.

Your system should have the  MS-7613 Iona motherboard

Bring up the picture that shows the motherboard and ensure that the jumpers you have match the positions of the one shown.

Verify the white 4 pin and 24 pin power connectors are secure in the socket.  if you have a spare atx power supply you could substitute it for the p6760uk power supply.  Even a fan cable connected backwards or offset by a pin could trip the power supply

Look at the capacitors and compare lo these pictures

Bad capacitors are more likely to occur on an older board but re also fairly easy to replace IMHO.

It is possible the board was damaged by a static discharge.  Before touching any internal component one should first touch the metal case.

Hi BeemerBiker, thank you so much for getting back to me, it was my late mums PC so I appreciate your help so much.

I have checked the jumper (green) against the motherboard you shared and they are in the same position on my board. I have checked all the capacitors and they are appear fine, no bulging or leaking that I can see as you can see in the pictures. It has been well maintained by myself and is very clean inside so i guess that rules out dust and debris. I wear an anti-static strap when I go inside a computer or laptop and I clamped it to an un-painted metal surface outside of the case.

The pc was bought in 2012 so it is a relatively old board but run perfectly before replacing the HDD apart from one issue.

Before I installed the SSD I would press the power button and the CPU fan would spin for a second then stop and then fire back up on its own and it would power on and run normally.

I don't think I have another ATX Power Supply to test, I will have to check my other tower as that is the only one I have available.

I will try pulling all the cables again and reseating them. Could it be the CPU causing the problem?

The pictures all look good and the  motherboard seems to be very clean.  I suspect there is no problem with the CPU.  The restart problem like you mentioned above I have seen on some of my older systems.  There is  a power surge that that the power supply interprets as an electrical problem such as a short on the motherboard.  I have one system that has that fan restart one to  three times before starting.

Disconnect all cables except the 24 and 4 pin, keyboard and monitor. No disk drive.  The CPU fan needs to be connected and you will need at least one stick of memory.

System should boot up into the bios setup since there is no disk drive.  You might have to press ESC or F10 or the DEL key.

Are there any beep codes?

System boots?

Try cleaning the power supply with an air duster and look for budging caps.

If still not booting up try another power supply.

MSI makes excellent motherboards and HP and other OEMs have contracted to have them built to their (HP) designs.

I cannot find any your system listed at any HP site.  Support such as bios upgrades, drivers, manuals have to be searched using google.

This MSI motherboard could be upgraded with larger memory and a better video board such as gtx-1070 or RX-570 with a 600 watt or better power supply but eventually the capacitors will go bad IMHO.  The case may need a better air flow also.

Thank you. I have already air blasted the PSU, Power button and ports etc. Won't hurt to give them another go.

There are no beeps or sounds from the tower. It used to beep once when it powered on normally. I will give your other suggestion a try to boot in to the bios, see how that goes. I know there are no drivers or bios updates on HP website, however if my mind serves me correctly, I downloaded the driver assistant and I am pretty sure it had a bios update newer than the one it originally came with as it has never had a bios update. Could the SSD have caused an issue, it is 1 TB Samsung 870 QVO?

Also in regards to the upgrade information, I have been looking for the best upgrades for it, GPU, CPU, SSD and PSU etc for Steam VR gaming with Meta Quest 2.

I am sorry, I am new to the PC gaming and PC upgrading scene. Are you saying to upgrade to a new motherboard or the forementioned upgrades only? If this machine is not compatible for VR even with upgrades, do you have any suggestions on a decent entry level to mid range desktop PC that would play AAA games?

Thank you once again for your time.

Hi BeemerBiker, I hope you're well.

I tried the suggestions for the bios and the same thing happens with the power, no beeps or boots to bios.

As I stated earlier that the PSU LED would go out instantly when I pressed the power button and it would not come back on until I unplug the mains cable and held the power button to drain residual power and plugged back in the mains cable.

I have noticed that after attaching the mains cable and pressing the power button the PSU LED would go out as usual, but now it is coming back on after a few seconds and staying on, it didn't do that before, it went off and statyed off.

Now, in this state I can press the power button over and over again and the LED stays on, even after unplugging the mains cable, but no power or fans. If I unplug the mains and press and hold the power button, then the LED goes out as it should. The PC still doesn't power on and the CPU fan still only spins for a second, I don't know if this helps with any problem solving.

Is it possible because the PC hasn't been used for a couple years the capacitors have drained all power and need time to charge back up again or may be dead?

Could it have been down to the SSD drive I installed which is a Samsung 870 QVO?

Thank you in advance.
