@Jamesallen1 -- the Rules of Participation for this discussion forum do not allow registered contributors to help you with "password" issues.
Also, "laptop" computers have extra protection, as compared to desktop computers, to prevent "hacking" the BIOS password. So, if you find a computer technician who is not a registered contributor, they probably will not be able to help.
Take the laptop back to the Thrift Store, to get "store credit", and tell them not to sell it to another bargain-hunter. Or, try to sell it "as is" on eBay.
Some contributors on this forum state that HP Support no longer gives "password-override" assistance. So, there is nothing that you can do.
Caveat emptor.

Hello
@Jamesallen1 please do not sell this computer on any other sales site
If it was sold to you, while locked, that leaves doubt !!
You don't say if it's used, I hope not, but you could very well try to resell a stolen product!
If you resell it, I don't know where you are, but with us, it is called concealment of theft, we can have sanctions, "" penal ""
Return it to where you bought it

@Prométhée -- please do not sell this computer on any other sales site
That is why I wrote "as is", so that the buyer knows that it is listed for its components (working screen, working keyboard, non-damaged hinges).
If it was sold to you, while locked, that leaves doubt !!
Certainly. the person who donated to the Thrift Store just wanted to "downsize", and did not want to bother "wiping" the disk-drive.
You don't say if it's used
It was purchased from a "Thrift Store". The only brand-new merchandise I have seen in such stores is brand-new mattresses, that were donated by bed-and-mattress stores that needed the space to accept brand-new shipments.
Return it to where you bought it
That is what I wrote -- the Thrift Store usually does not return your cash/credit payment; instead, they give "credit" for anything else that you would buy, in the future, from their store.
