Machine wont post with Samsung SSD attached

Pavilion 510-p057a
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I wanted to swap out the 2TB hard drive for a 500GB Samsung SSD. The Computer wont post with the drive attached. You only see the HP Logo and wont allow you to go into the BIOS. I have turned off secure boot, and tested with another drive (500GB WD spinning disk)  so i know secure boots is turned off. I have two machines exactly the same, and i tested with 3 brand new Samsung SSD  and the same thing happens with each machine drive. Any ideas?

Machine wont post with Samsung SSD attached

@Rouseabout, welcome to the forum.

I have installed a Samsung EVO 840 SSD in several HP desktop without changing any settings in the BIOS.  The best way to install it is, leave the HDD connected like it came from the factory.  Install the Samsung Data Migration software on it and connect the SSD to another SATA port on the motherboard.  Run the Migration software.  Choose the target drive which would be the SSD.  Once the HDD has been cloned to the SSD you can disconnect the HDD and boot to the SSD.  This has always worked the first time for me.  As I said, without any changes to the BIOS/UEFI.  Give this a try to see what happens.

Note: You may want to reset the BIOS to the Defaults before you begin.

Yeah, i tried that first, but as soon as you plug the SSD into the machine it wont post/boot. I then went down the path of trying different settings in the BIOS like turning off Secure Boot. The motherboard has two SATA ports. As shipped the 2TB is plugged into one and the DVD-ROM the other. I unplugged the DVD ROM  and plugged the EVO 850 into that Sata port. Machine wont post. I swapped the Sata ports the drives were plugged into and the same thing happen the machine wont post. I tried this with a 500GB WD (spinning disk) and the machine works fine. SOmething about the Samsung EVO 500GB Sata drive that it doesnt like.

Thank you for the additional information, @Rouseabout.

Were you able to clone the HDD to the SSD when you first connected the SSD?  If so, you should disconnect the HDD before attempting to boot.  The BIOS will get confused if you have two OS's on the two drives.

Using the Samsung Migration Tool i did clone the drive but ONLY when the Samsung EVO850 was plugged into a USB 3.0  adapter. If i plug the Samsung EVO850 (with image) into Sata Port 1 with no other drives attached the machine does not post. When i plug the Samsung EVO 850 (with imgae) into Sata port 2 with no other drives attached the machine does not post. When i plug the Samsung EVO into either port with or without other drives attached the machine does not post.

The point being as soon as i plug the EVO850 500 GB SSD inot the machine on either Sata port does not post. I.e. it will not go passed the HP logo. You cannot enter the BIOS, it does not boot.

Thank you for the additional information, @Rouseabout.

Do you have the SATA "power" and "data" cables attached to the SSD?  This is necessary for it to work properly.

Thanks for your input but these are all basic things you mention. I have cloned over 30 disks on Windows and Apple machines over the past 2 years and havent come across a problem like this before. It looks ike my best bet it to contact HP directly

You are welcome.  Thank you for the additional information, @Rouseabout.

I am sorry that nothing has worked for you.  It is difficult for us to know the technical level of the members requesting help.  Most have had no experience working on computers.  Therefore, we have to begin with computing 101.

As I said, I have installed the EVO 840 several times lately and it worked every time using the method that I recommended.  In fact, I am using it as I type this post on my Omen X (900-025vr).

Good luck!
