Random Restarts (550-114a)

550-114a
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

We have an issue with this computer where it randomly restarts without any errors. The computer is running normally, and then instantly restarts (Its not some sort of Windows update forced restart, its an instant black screen). It happens once or twice a week. It is a business machine so the load is minimal (e.g. Word, Excel, Email, Web browser etc).

Looking at the MMC System logs, at the time of restart there is a Critical Error (Kernel-Power):

The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.

  • We have installed a UPS for the machine so it is fed a clean and uninterrupted power supply so there is no problem there - just in case it was the power circuit dropping out.
  • We updated Windows fully and also updated drivers fully with the HP support assistant.
  • We went through a full UEFI scan via the BIOS to check for any hardware issues and nothing raised.
  • We turned off the setting that hides a bluescreen in case there was some error being displayed but no luck
  • We've tried a few other minor things but nothing seems to resolve the issue.

Are there any hints from HP Support?

Hi,

Looks like system goes unstable. If it's hardware related, it may be resulted from component upgarde which may drain more current from the power supply.  On the countrary, you can try to remove the graphic card and use the UMA graphic port to see if the sympton goes away.
