Shutting down unexpectedly

HP Pavilion Elite HPE-180t
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

I was making music using FL Studio last night, when my HP Pavilion Elite HPE-180t shuts down unexpectedly.  I would not post this if it only happen once, but it happened alot recently. Its irritating. There was no warning or anything. Its an old pc but I maintained it really well.

Shutting down unexpectedly

When the computer is running, do you feel any breeze, from air being exhausted by the fan inside the power-supply?

If not, that fan could have failed.  If there is a breeze, is it "warm" or "hot" ?

It could be overheating, and the motherboard is proactively shutting itself down, to prevent permanent damage.

After an event, can you restart it, and enter BIOS SETUP, to see if any of the menus will display the current CPU temperature?

Or, after restarting, Google-search for "download free SPECCY".

Download, install, and run SPECCY.

It will display:

  • temperature of the motherboard,
  • temperature of the processor,
  • temperature of the disk-drive,
  • speed (RPM) of the fan on top of the processor,

Under its "Storage" branch of the tree, expand the 'SMART' section, to look at the detailed measurements about the "health" of the disk-drive.
