Microsoft Windows 8 (64-bit)

Once I turn on my laptop you only have a certain amount of time to login before it freezes, whenever I login in that time limit it logs in but my screen turns black but I can still move my cursor through it all. It started happening when I was playing a few games and it wouldn’t open one of the tabs so I exit the screen out. Then, I couldn’t open ANY windows at all. So I restarted my laptop and it started to do this.

Welcome to our humble abode, the family and tech-friendly house of HP Forums!

Before troubleshooting lockup or freeze problems on your computer, check these items for a better solution to specific symptoms:

  • If a blue screen error opens and you cannot continue, go to Error Messages Display on a Blue Screen.

  • If the computer locks up during bot or while logging in or at random times, or shortly after turning on the computer, a hardware component might be failing. For information about testing for a failing component, go to Testing for Hardware Failures - Get back to us with the results, use F2 during a restart to access the diagnostic menu and perform an extensive system test to ensure this isn't a hardware issue.

  • If lockups occur when coming out of a sleep or suspend mode, restart the computer. Adjust the power settings and update the BIOS to fix this problem. For more information, go to Sleep and Hibernate Issues (Windows 10, 😎.
