Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I bought this laptop last year (Feb 2021).  I noticed it got extremely hot and the fan sounded like an airplane taking off.   I bought a laptop stand to create ventilation and set the cooling settings to keep it cooler.  On several occasions I have opened up the laptop while it was sleeping to find the screen completely black.  The fan would be running like crazy.  I have to press and hold the power button to do a hard restart in order to get the screen to come back.  This happens on occasion, even though the laptop is always on the stand.  This morning I turned the laptop on to see a Thermal shutdown warning window, and then it restarted on it's own.

Is there something wrong with this computer, or is this way that HP designed the computer to work?  I have several projects I am working on at any given moment, and prefer not to have to shut down my computer every time I walk away.  Unfortunately, if I don't, I risk losing work that I've done.  Is there a solution to this, or is this something I have to live with?
