HP Envy 700
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have an HP Envy 17in laptop that isn't booting and the flashing LED code points to a BIOS issue. I downloaded the appropriate BIOS to create a recovery USB but when I try to run it it causes my desktop to lock up completely. It extracts the installation files for the BIOS utility and then locks up wen trying to install. It doesn't respond at all, even after waiting for a few minutes, and I end up having to do a hard shutdown.

I'm downloading the BIOS from this HP Support page: https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-envy-17-j100-quad-edition-notebook-pc-series/666...

Is there another way to create a recovery USB to try and restore my laptop?

Hi

Step 1 is to download manually?

Next is it runs and extracts (see attachment)?

However I was unable to verify the USB part of the process.

My initial issue was that after running that and it extracting the files it tried to auto-launch the Update Utility as seen in your attached screenshot, but it was causing my computer to lock up when it tried to launch that.

I just went into the extracted files and launched it manually, which worked, but now I have a different issue in that it won't detect my USB drive to create a recovery USB. I'm sure it needs something more than just copying the BIOS files over for it to be allowed to flash the BIOS on my laptop. Do you know of a manual way of prepping the USB drive? I don't have another one available to test with right now.

I've already tried the other steps in the links you shared and none of them fixed it. Creating a BIOS recovery USB is the last step before I just call the laptop a goner at this point.

Hi

No

But I believe FD if for floppy drive,

WDFinst.exe would be the one to try.

A couple updates on my attempts to resolve this.

Manually running the BIOS Update Utility worked at first, but couldn't detect my USB drive. I was able to get a different USB drive to test with, but when I tried to manually run the utility again it was causing my desktop to lock up again. Running the WDFinst.exe pops up a command prompt too quick for me to see what it's doing, but nothing else, and running the InsydeFlash.exe is what was sort of working before but is causing things to lock up again now.

Not sure what other steps I can take if the BIOS utility itself can't even run on my machine to create the USB recovery drive.

So

C:\SWSetup\SP82482>wdfinst.exe

C:\SWSetup\SP82482>flshook.exe

C:\SWSetup\SP82482>insydeflash.exe

C:\SWSetup\SP82482>

insydeflash runs from a command prompt as admin.

So I would make a W10 bootable media, add a folder SP82482, copy the 16 files and try

and run insydeflash.exe from the command prompt.

X:\SWSetup\SP82482>path
PATH=C:\ProgramData\Oracle\Java\javapath;C:\WINDOWS\system32;C:\WINDOWS;C:\WINDOWS\System32\Wbem;C:\WINDOWS\System32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\;C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Seagate\SnapAPI\;C:\WINDOWS\System32\OpenSSH\;C:\Program Files (x86)\AOMEI Backupper;C:\Program Files\PuTTY\;C:\Users\LBB\AppData\Local\Microsoft\WindowsApps

X: path

and if necessary add sp82482

X:\SP82482>path=%path%;X:\;X:\sp82482
