Microsoft Windows 10 (32-bit)

Trying to login after desktop picture appears but don’t get a login box.  Then moved mouse and black screen came up.  Eventually desk picture came up but the moving mouse it went to black again.  Turned off computer.  Did this a couple times but computer must not be off. Now the power button is blinking and has been for awhile.  What should I do?

Hi @Luvs2dance,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

There could be several reasons why you are not able to log in to your HP laptop and are instead getting a dark screen. Here are a few troubleshooting steps you can try.

  • Restart your computer: This might sound like a cliché, but a simple restart can fix a lot of issues. Press and hold the power button to shut down your laptop, wait for a few seconds, and then press the power button again to start it up.
  • Check your display settings: If your laptop's display settings are incorrect, it could result in a dark screen. Try connecting your laptop to an external monitor to see if the problem persists. If it doesn't, adjust the display settings on your laptop.
  • Check for updates: Ensure that your laptop is running the latest version of Windows or any other operating system you're using. Sometimes, outdated software can cause login issues.
  • Boot in safe mode: Try booting your laptop in safe mode to see if the login box appears. This can help you identify if the problem is caused by a third-party application or software.
  • Reset your laptop: If none of the above solutions work, you can try resetting your laptop. Keep in mind that this will delete all your files, so back up important data before resetting.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Yes, the restart did help!  I didn’t have the computer turned all the way off.  Thank you!’
