Envy 400-410xt
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

USB mouse and keyboard become unresponsive at W10 generic background screen - i.e. the screen just before the Windows sign-in screen.  the computer reponds to F10 during boot to enter the BIOS but becomess unresponsive once W10 comes up. The mouse lights up for a second but quickly goes black.

I did a hard reset and "Restore Default Settings" per forum results but this didn't help. I also tried several 2.0 and 3.0 USB ports and confirmed that the wired mouse and keyboard  I'm using work on a different computer.

I didn't install any new hardware, software or operating system components but the hard disk did seem unusually busy when the problem first occurred. I have up-to-date virus protection through Comcast.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. That worked. I struggled a bit to get the PC to boot from the DVD drive recovery disk but once I did the instructions in the link you provided solved the problem.
