How do you mean "locks up itself"?

your pc show an error message?

If you hear crackling noise, and power off your device: probably fan function failure.

When pc start up success, and you hear fan when start, its probably ok. When this is a crackling noise : your fan is wrong.

When your pc start, fans spinning up for test functionality.
Normal fan noise : OK
Crackling noise : fan failure
power off : overheating or other hardware issue.
