Every time my PC needs to do a restart it closes down but will not restart until I physically reboot it. Any suggestions?

This appears to be a windows 10 or 11 update problem.

Bring up the window update dialogue box and look at the  update history. Are any updates failing? If so, what is the KB number.  You can try manually downloading the update causing the problem and then running it .  It is possible an update can not be installed due to a problem that it not obvious.  The event viewer can be checked.

Bring up the event viewer and look under system and applications for any errors.  Some devices can veto a shutdown and timeouts on network attached storage or shared objects on other computers can cause problems.  Some application may "phone home" during a restart and never make the connection.

Do any errors show up when running HP diagnostics?  Press ESCS when booting up to run the diags.

Try running the system file checked.  https://www.kapilarya.com/how-to-use-system-file-checker-to-repair-windows-10

Thanks for the reply. I had already tried SFC which hadn't found any errors. I'd also ran the HP diagnostics with no luck.

I thought I'd try a DSIM restore image at that appears to have solved the problem.

Thanks

What about the event viewer and the update history?

any errors messages or update failures?

No update failures although there was an id-1000 error message in the event viewer.
