@martinian -- Is this your computer: https://support.hp.com/ca-en/document/c06408543
Is this your motherboard: https://support.hp.com/ca-en/document/c05929092
It has a M.2 socket labelled for SSD.
So, it seems possible to enter BIOS SETUP, and configure the M.2 SSD to be the "primary boot device".
I do not see anything PREVENTING it from working.

@martinian -- I didn't see the option to make M.2 as primary boot device hence this post
When the M.2 is attached, start-up the computer, and enter BIOS SETUP.
Te M.2 should detected as a SSD?
Under the "boot" option, it should be listed. Do you see it?
On some computers, the "boot" options are "grouped" -- disk-drives in one group, and CD/DVD devices in another group, and so on. If this is what you see, open the "disk-drives" group, and move the M.2 to the top of the list of disk-drives.

Can you find a computer-store with a "no questions asked within 7 days" return policy?
If so, you can "try & buy & refund".
