@dar25 -- try this:

  1. power-off your computer.
  2. power-on your computer, and immediately start tapping the ESC or F2 or F10 keys, until you see a menu.
  3. On that menu, select "HP Hardware Diagnostics", and run the "short" (a minute or two) test against your disk-drive. If you get a "fail", then do NOT run the "long" (many minutes) test -- it will not give you any additional information.

How old is the computer? If less than 12 months, then exercise the HP Warranty to get it repaired/replaced, at HP's expense.
