hp 15-dy1031wm after ram upgrade won't start

Does it work if the old ram is put back in?  If so, possibly you have the wrong type of ram.

Kingston memory finder lists two different  15-dy  products.  One has a single socket the other has two.

https://www.kingston.com/en/memory/search/systemdevices?makeOrModel=hp+15

and can be upgraded using only 8gb memory sticks "1rx8" or "1rx16"only.

What memory did you obtain?  was it double sided or single sided?  Was your old memory single or douible sided?  Speed should be 2666 and if you added a 2nd chip it is recommended to use the same manufacturer / model "matching".as the one in the other slot.

After installing the 2 memory sticks (16 GB ea) the CPU started normally without a problem. Then I checked to see the installed ram and only one slot was in use, that was the last time I saw it working. I removed the 2 memory sticks, switched them around, didn't start, replaced the original memory stick in its original position, nothing, switched to the other slot, nothing. I did every combination between the new 16 GB and the original 8 GB, no luck. If I would of known this was going to happen I would have left it working with one slot, I fear I lost my Laptop.

Thanks for your concern.

You need to clear the CMOS.

Unplug system, remove the large battery and reset the CMOS by removing the coin battery

The manual for disassembly is here

I did not see a coin battery so possibly the main battery is used to keep the CMOS settings.  You will need to disconnect the main battery

Look for different type of coin battery such as one that is vertical

If the memory worked before and is not working now the cmos needs to be reset.

Please look at this manual

http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c08098272.pdf

see if you can disconnect the main battery and look for a coin battery somewhere to remove it for a few minutes.

You may have to contact tech support to see how to reset the system.

Perhaps it is like my surface pro 4 where I had to hold down the volume and on button for 10 second to reset the CMOS.

I just guessing there is some way to reset the cmos.  If the old memory does not work it is because the bios is stuck on the new memory that did not work and it needs to be reset.
