HP Pavilion a1120n Desktop PC
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

my HP windows desktop pc is completely locked up.  Only the start screen shows on the monitor and all the available options shown on the start screen ( "esc" = boot menu, f10 = setup, f11 = system recovery, f9 = diagnostics) are not working - no action happens.  I've tried pressing every key and combination I can think of but nothing occurs.

Unfortunately I can't get past the HP start screen (displays this message: "loading boot menu" but nothing loads).  So I am not able to boot pc or get to download HP Diagnostic UEFI.  Thank you for the link to those diagnostic tests I will certainly try them if I ever get this pc to bootup

Check the operation of the program from the link
If you cannot create a usb key, to restart with , try turning off the computer by holding down the power button for a while
then restart and immediately type the F2 key several times..
In general, a version is already installed

Thank you for your continuing support.  I tried booting up from a cold start with a USB stick (Emergency Boot Program) and with an HP Recovery CD.  Neither method worked no matter which function keys (including F2) were pressed.  The startup screen keeps showing "loading boot menu" but pc never goes to boot menu or any other screen.  I also tried removing CMOS battery and waited 5 minutes before reinserting it but this had no effect on pc

Try to see if possible

I've been away for a few weeks.  I tried pressing F10 key at startup but just like pressing "esc" key the startup screen stays fixed - this time with the message "Entering Setup .." but setup never loads (no matter how long I wait). No further action takes place and the computer will not bootup.  Any other suggextions?

Unplug all peripherals
Unplug the power
long press power button
Open the computer remove the battery !
If there is a graphics card, remove it
Remove the memory module(s)
Take advantage of it for a little cleaning

replace one memory module (leave the computer open)
Replace the Cmos battery
connect the computer, the monitor on the motherboard, keyboard mouse
restart
