Hi @mkbarnes,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The error code 502 in an HP Notebook 15 typically points to a BIOS issue, often due to a BIOS checksum error. This can happen if the BIOS is corrupted or there was a failed BIOS update. Here's a step-by-step guide to resolve the issue.

Steps to troubleshoot BIOS error code 502:

Power Reset the Laptop:

  • Shut down your laptop.
  • Disconnect all external devices (USB drives, external monitors, etc.).
  • Unplug the power adapter and remove the battery (if removable).
  • Press and hold the power button for 15-30 seconds to drain any residual power.
  • Reconnect the battery and power adapter, then try to turn on the laptop.

Perform a BIOS Recovery:

  • If the laptop still does not boot, try to recover the BIOS.
  • Press and hold the Windows + B keys, then press and hold the Power button for 2-3 seconds.
  • Release the power button but continue holding Windows + B keys until the BIOS recovery screen appears.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to recover or update the BIOS.

Try a Hard Reset:

  • Power off the laptop and press the Esc key repeatedly while turning it back on to access the Startup Menu.
  • From the Startup Menu, press F10 to enter the BIOS setup.
  • Load the BIOS default settings by pressing F9, then save changes by pressing F10 and restart the laptop.

Update the BIOS:

  • If the laptop boots, ensure that the BIOS is up to date.
  • Visit the HP Support website and enter your laptop's model to find the latest BIOS update.
  • Download and install the BIOS update following the instructions provided.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
