t5540 won't boot from IDE HDD

t5540
Microsoft Windows XP

Hello all, newbie here.

I've been all over the web trying to find answers to my challenge and figure I'd give this forum a shot (praying smiley here).

I bought a t5540 thin client off ebay and successfully replaced the ATA flash ROM board with a 2.5" HDD, and using an external DVD drive, loaded windows xp pro with no problems. This has been running 24/7 for months. I've since bought another t5540 attempting to do the same again but not so lucky this time I guess. The format and file load looks to be working as before but get "disk error" and "cannot locate operating system" errors when the pc tries to boot from the HDD.

I tried the same IDE ribbon cable/HDD on another thin client (t5570) and it loads and boots fine. I've tried pulling the CMOS battery to clear it, reloading/ updating the BIOS and different HDD's and ribbon cables (even though this set works with other thin clients). In the Windows format section I've tried different partition  sizes and format types (FAT32/NTFS) with no difference.

Anyone gone through this before and had successful results? Appreciate any help.

t5540 won't boot from IDE HDD

Those IDE disk-drives have small "jumpers" to configure the disk-drive:

* master

* master with a slave being present

* slave

* cable-select (requires the usage of an 80-strand ribbon-cable, not a 40-strand cable).

Are the jumpers in the same position on the two disk-drives?

t5540 won't boot from IDE HDD

Hi mdklassen and thanks for the reply.

 Yes, the drives are configured with the pins open (un-jumpered) which is drive select 0. The other two options are drive 1 and cable select. I have the HP flash ROM removed and the drive in it's place so it's the only drive installed. The first t5540 that's been running for months is configured this way.

 On this subject, I'm working on another attempt to get this working. I'm  building a IDE interface cable so I can have the HP flash ROM installed to a cable with the hard drive attached also. Then I will add the jumper you mention to assign it as drive 1 (the flash will be drive 0). I'm hoping it will run like this. Boot with the HP ROM and see drive "D" where I can load programs, etc.

 It just baffles me how the drive is "seen" in BIOS, partitions/formats/loads Windows fine but after that the t5540 doesn't "see" it when attempting to boot.

 Thanks again for the information and regards.

Dan
