Pavillion Power 580-131
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

HELLO FRIENDS

My prebuilt PC contains a 300W PSU and an RX 580 4gb. The card is powered by 6-pin PSU connector, but it appears I also have an extra 2+6 pins available.

The specs for my PC state, regarding the GPU, "Total power consumption: 150 W max."

The RX 580 4gb cards sold online "require" a 500W PSU - but apparently this is BS? My PC / RX580 runs beautifully with its 300W. I've also added an SSD and doubled the ram since purchase.

MY QUESTION:

Could I replace the RX 580 with a newer GPU requiring an 8 pin power connector but with a TDP of less than or equal to 150W?

For example, could I upgrade to a GeForce GTX 1660 Super (TDP 125W, 8-pin)?

Hello,

So indeed there is no need to have 500 W for a Rx580 it is more a recommendation including the cpu consumption and other things plus a guarband to be safe but if the datasheet of your computer state that it can support a 150 W graphic card it is indeed okay to put a 125 W one but maybe you shouldn't overclock it too much because you have not much headroom.

Just check the temps with a software like PCmonitor CPUZ or thing like that

Have a nice day

Hello
indeed we could say that there will be no worries, seen like that ..
But the models are very varied, it is better to refer to the manufacturer's recommendations.
For example :
https://uk.msi.com/Graphics-Card/GeForce-GTX-1660-SUPER-GAMING-X/Specification

You must also check if indeed the connectors are available, and if the chosen card is not too big !!

You will probably have difficulty, if need to replace the power supply.
