From a quick search online it seems it might do (although it doesn't say anywhere on the PC itself), but if so why do I get "Display connection might be limited" when I try to connect a DP adaptor (with Vive, if that specifically isn't supported)?

@Wonderings , welcome to the Community.

Here is the Motherboard Specifications page: https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/hp-pavilion-570-p000-desktop-pc-series/13823514/document/c05382...

If you look at the section titled "I/O Ports and Jumpers/Back I/O ports" there is no mention of Thunderbolt USB-C.  I am certain that it would be listed if it were available.

What's strange, though, is that it seems to switch temporarily audio-wise to the device, but then switches back soon... could this happen if the port couldn't transmit video/audio?

@Wonderings, I am not certain what could be causing this to happen.
