I see the motherboard has an M2.SSD. Does that mean I can purchase and install an SSD without additional hardware?
thanks

You need a 2280 m.2 NVMe PCIe SSD. I suggest a 512 GB capacity model.
HP Envy 17", i7-8550u,16GB, 512GB NVMe, 4K screen, Windows 11 x64
Custom PC - Z690, i9-12900K, 32GB DDR5 5600, dual 512 GB NVMe, gen4 2 TB m.2 SSD, 4K screen, OC'd to 5 Ghz, NVIDIA 3080 10GB

Hi
Have you tried HP Support?
Some HP motherboard's M.2 slots only support PCIe 3x4 drives. Your M.2 socket is a key M slot.
Please see this article on M.2 drives which has a pretty good explanation. Key M slots only support PCIe 3x4.
So a SATA SSD may not work.

I just installed a Samsung EVO 960 into my 570-p094, cloned boot drive onto the SSD using the Samsung cloning tools (I have both the HP and system image backups) and booted onto the SSD (unplugged the existing HD and selected the SSD as the boot drive) without any problems. So far the most difficult problem has been screwing the SSD board onto the motherboard (small screw fat fingers). Due to budget constraints, I went with the 225 gb drive, so I’ll move my pictures (static storage), and music (mostly static storage) to the old HD to free up space on the SSD.
