Can't find power supply to upgrade.

I have a HP Pavilion Desktop, model number 318G5AA. I am needing a new graphics card but the power supply is only 180w, so I can't upgrade. I've searched the internet for a proprietary PSU above 180w that will work with my motherboard but can't find anything. The 7 pin connector has 4 wires in it, a black, purple, grey and green. The ones i find online either have only 3 wires or they have all 7. Am I stuck?

Thank you for the speedy reply! I don’t see my model number on the spreadsheet. The 400w power supply (L04618-800) looks most compatible but the proprietary HP 7-pin cable looks different than my current 180w.

pictured is my current 7-pin connector:

the 400w power supply is missing the purple wire. Any idea what the purple wire is for and if it is still compatible regardless?

Based on this well-researched spreadsheet, I am confident this 400-watt power supply will work on your desktop.  No, I do not know what the purple wire is for.  I admit, from my own experiences upgrading HP PCs, sometimes it requires a leap of faith, so to speak.  I would purchase one from an eBay Seller who allows returns if the power supply doesn't work.

I see, so from what I’ve read, this will still work but I may have issues with the PCU fan. I am going to purchase the 400w because it has the 3 wire(7 pin) connector vs the 500w has the all of the wires.

I suppose it’s better to miss the purple wire rather than have 3 or 4 additional wires? Time will tell. It would be nice if HP could standardize these just a *tad* more, especially since they essentially cut off third party manufacturers.

nonetheless, I will purchase this and follow up once it is installed to give clarity to anyone else whom may have the purple wire. Thanks again for all the help!!

I installed the new 400W (L04618-800) power supply today and it is functioning 100% as intended. No issues with the fan, and no error message on boot.

The purple wire from the original 180W PSU is not present on the 400W PSU but it doesn't seem to have any noticeable effect on the PSU or PSU fan. The fan does run continuously at one speed, perhaps the purple wire regulates speed, who knows.

I had the very same question recently when I upgraded my HP ProDesk 600 G3 MT's power supply with a compatible 400-watt power supply (HP p/n: 942332-001), which is equipped with a 6+2-PCIe power cable needed to power a GTX 1660 Ti.

Just like your power supply, the purple wire on the proprietary "P2" 7-pin connector was missing too, but this made no difference whatsoever: upon installation, the HP ProDesk 600 G3 MT issued no beeps, error message(s), a flashing red light or other issues.

Btw: at least with this 400-watt power supply, the cooling fans are revving up when the processor heats up.
