HP ProDesk 400 G6 Desktop Mini
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi Community

I have purchased  HP ProDesk 400 G6 Desktop Mini

It only came with 256GB

I want to install a Samsung 860 Evo 2TB SSD

It is not being recognised by the PC

I have gone through the BIOS and cannot change it to Legacy

Any ideas?

It only came with 256GB            is this an M.2  NVMe 256GB device?

I want to install a Samsung 860 Evo 2TB SSD    this is a 2.5" SATA device.  5 times slower than a PCIex4 M.2, is that for a boot device or strictly data ?

It is not being recognised by the PC      did you format the 2.5" device?

Thank you for your reply

The drive that came with the PC is M.2 16GB Optane / 256GB NAND

The Two devices i have tried but not recognised

Samsung M.2 V-NAND SSD 860 EVO 2TB

The M.2 NMVe device is a dual component. It has a 16GB Optane memory module and a 256GB SSD storage device.

The presence of Optane is a hardware/software issue. You can not separate the intertwined hardware, and the Intel driver software for the Optane is a problem if you attempt to remove the device.

What is Optane                 How to disable Optane and its dangers

1) The only way around this is to dis-engage the Optane.  Follow the instructions precisely. Then "computer must be restarted, not shut down".  Get this wrong, and BOOM !!!!

2) Now you can clone the OS to the new 860 EVO.

3) Then swap out the NVMe devices.  Boot from the 860 and clone to the EVO 970.

4) Shutdown, unplug the 860 EVO.  Reboot from the EVO 970.  If all is OK,

5) The 860 EVO can be reconnected, and safely formatted.

There is quicker way around, you use a NVMe to USB3.0 adapter.  Follow step 1. Then attach the adapter and clone to the EV0 970.  Swap out the NMVe and you get to keep a 256 GB device as portable data device.
