My optical drive (HP DVDRAM GT50N) did not work for a long time.  I think this feature was lost ever since I upgraded my operating system to Windows 10.   I discovered issue after trying to view some older DVD's that I burned.  The system could not even find the E: drive.  After using many HP trouble shooters I finally got the E: drive to show up.  However, it could not read any kind of disks.  I tried multiple trouble shooters, including those proposed on the HP Community, without any success.    Any ideas???

Look in the device manager and see what messages you get in there, looking for any device with a red x or yellow exclamation mark and hidden devices.

Also check in the bios setup and see if is enabled and recognized in there and try the bios setup diagnostic for it if it is.

The YouTube video recovery method did not work.  I was able to do the same thing following HP's method and the result  was the same.  It did fix the issue of showing and E: drive (DVD) that was previously missing, but discs are not being read.  THere have never been any messages, red x, yellow exclamation or hidden devices in the device manager.

I checked the BIOS and the optical device was shown and highlighted.  I ran a long test in that mode and everything passed.

Any other ideas!?

Does the dvd that you are trying to read spin? It may need a clean, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WVHBRMQieMU with something like this.

The DVD Spins.  I have tried multiple DVDs including purchased and self-burned ones.  Not read.

Did you try the onboard diagnostics, that would isolate windows issues.
