HP ENVY Desktop - 795-0040xt CTO
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have the HP Envy desktop 795-0017na with a HP 844C Berks motherboard which has a M.2 socket 3, key M and am planning to replace the 2TB HD with an SSD. I see Gen3 and Gen4 PCIe SDDs advertised but don’t know if a Gen4 with be of any benefit it the motherboard doesn’t support the higher transfer speeds (or even if a Gen 3 is of any benefit). The available motherboard specs didn’t seem to provide any answers.

The Gen 3 SSD that I was considering is the following: WD_BLACK 2TB SN750 NVMe Internal Gaming SSD Solid State Drive - Gen3 PCIe, M.2 2280, 3D NAND, Up to 3,400 MB/s - WDS200T3X0C

Hi:

You can usually determine the PCIe generation by looking up the chipset specs on the Intel website for Intel PC's.

Your PC's chipset has a PCIe revision of 3.0.

Intel® H370 Chipset

So, unless you plan on transferring a Gen 4 SSD to a newer model PC in the future, it will not perform at its maximum advertised read/write speeds in your PC.
