I've not needed CDs/DVDs, but recently it clicked that the "new" (last year) laptop doesn't have the drives... so I got an external device (Sony AD-7233s).

I've plugged it into the USB, the light goes on it, but it makes no sound.  I'm trying to figure out what's wrong (broken, doesn't work etc) and I'm not finding things, can't find specific info on this item. But not sure if it's a problem with Windows 10 (as some sites say, Win10 doesn't work with ANY external drive... which is odd) or is it something about this one (Sony) not working with the HP laptop... or it's broken... or I'm just unlucky.

I've tried to look up info, I can find it's listed on the laptop with the right device model, so I presume that means it should work... but as it doesn't, anyone know if that's as it won't work with HP, Win10, or if it's broken?

I'm not highly technical, but not a beginner - I can do a few things.... will do my best to follow any advice/help given!

look in your power setting and turn off the usb suspend timer. i had an issue like this with a hp desktop once. i turned the option off to suspend the usb ports and  it worked fineafter that.
