I am planning to upgrade storage for my HP ENVY - 13-aq1020ca. What type SSD is installed in it and do I have an extra slot to add the storage or do I have to replace the current SSD? What's the maximum capacity of SSD which can be installed in it?

You will have to replace the existing 256 GB NVMe SSD with one having a greater storage capacity since there is only support for one M.2 SSD.

Below is the link to the service manual:

HP offered drives up to 1 TB in the model series.

I don't see any reason why you couldn't install a larger capacity drive as long as it is single-sided, so it fits in the M.2 slot.

Crucial indicates that they sell NVMe SSD's up to 4 TB for your notebook.
