HP ENVY 23 23se-d394
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have HP ENVY 23 23se-d394 all in one and my hard drive just gave up and when I’m restarting the computer I’m getting a blue screen with hard drive error.
Since it’s seems that I have to change the hard drive I was thinking to upgrade from HDD to SSD, anyone knows if this is supported with my

model? Also which SSD drive should I get to be a good fit from connection and placement?

what I currently have is : Seagate Barracuda 1000 GB Model: ST1000DM003 PN: 1CH162-021 FW: HP34

also since I can’t access the computer at all I don’t know how to get the windows 8 product ID so I can reinstall windows on the new drive, so any pointers are welcome.

Hi:

A SSD would work in your PC, but you would need to buy a 3.5" to 2.5" drive adapter to fit the smaller 2.5" SSD.

They make several different models and shapes, so you would have to find the one that may work best for your specific application.

I recommend this model SSD for your PC in a storage capacity that fits your needs and budget...this is the 500 GB model...

https://www.amazon.com/Blue-NAND-500GB-SSD-WDS500G2B0A/dp/B073SBZ8YH/ref=sr_1_2?crid=30VY2F95NK6TZ&d...

Here is a listing of various 3.5" to 2.5" adapters...as you can see, there are many different styles.

https://www.amazon.com/s?k=3.5+to+2.5+adapter+hard+drive&crid=20OHSD5GU16BK&sprefix=3.5%22+to+2.5%22...

Below are the links to the service videos where you can find the rear cover and hard drive removal and replacement procedure...

The Windows 8 product key is in the PC's BIOS.  You do not need it to reinstall Windows.

Here is a free way to reinstall W8.1 by using the W8 product key in your PC's BIOS...

Install W8.1 by creating the Microsoft installation media, using another Windows PC, if yours is not working...You want W8.1 64 bit.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows8ISO

If you are asked to enter a product key during the installation process, use this generic key.

This is the generic key for W8.1 'Standard.'

334NH-RXG76-64THK-C7CKG-D3VPT

If you had to enter the generic key, manually change the generic product key to the W8 key in your PC's BIOS in the PC settings menu.

After you get W8.1 installed, and you had to manually enter the W8.1 generic product key, you will need to run the free utility I zipped up and attached below, that will show you show the W8 product key in your PC's BIOS.

I have also zipped up and attached below, the Microsoft tool which hopefully will transfer the ISO file to a DVD or USB flash drive so it is bootable.

Then you can install the available drivers and software from your PC's support page.

Thank you so much for the detailed information, I’ll order everything and will let you know.
3 questions:

1. the 3.5 to 2.5 adapter, this is just a mounting bracket, right?

2. Do I have to install windows 8, or can I go with 10 right away? As I already created a bootable USB with win10.
3. I have managed to run the HP diagnostic and under the system info I see operating system image, is this the product key?

You're very welcome.

1.  Yes.  That is just a mounting bracket.  Some folks use duct tape.  I would only do that as a last resort.

2.  If you had previously upgraded to W10, you don't need to install W8/8.1 first.

You can use the media creation tool at the link below to create bootable installation media.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

When you get to the part of the installation were you are asked to enter a product key, select the 'I don't have a product key' option and W10 will install and automatically activate once you are connected to the internet.  You don't have to use the utilities I attached earlier.

3.  You cannot view the windows product key unless you run the Showkey plus utility that I had attached earlier, and you have to be in Windows to run the utility.

Thank you again.
the SSD Drive you recommended is unavailable in 1 TB, can you recommend a different one?

You're very welcome.

You can get it from this vendor...

https://www.newegg.com/western-digital-blue-1tb/p/N82E16820250088?Description=western%20digital%20bl...

You can also get it from Best Buy...

If you want to buy on Amazon only, this one would be equivalent.  Costs a bit more though...Western Digital bought Sandisk out.
