Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello.

I am considering to upgrade my pc with additional 2.5" SSD. But I am wondering what does the SATA port colors mean on my mother board. It has 3 SATA ports where Sata 0 is dark blue while two others are white. I have currently an SSD connected to Sata 0, HDD connected to Sata 1 and CD/DVD disc drive connected to sata 2, which is white port.

So, I was wondering if I can remove my DVD disc drive and add my new SSD to that white Sata 2 port with no issues.

Motherboard is Odense 2-S and I couldn't find much info about it online.MOBO.PNG

@Hilapizutin,

It's great that you're considering upgrading your PC with an additional 2.5" SSD! Regarding your Odense 2-S motherboard's SATA ports:

🔹 What Do SATA Port Colors Mean?

On many HP motherboards, the colors typically indicate port priority or different SATA controllers, but in most cases, they function the same. Here’s what they likely represent on your Odense 2-S:

  • SATA0 (Dark Blue) – Primary (often recommended for the main OS drive).
  • SATA1 (White) – Secondary storage (HDD, SSD, or other drives).
  • SATA2 (White) – Additional storage or optical drive (CD/DVD).

Can You Replace the DVD Drive with an SSD?

Yes! You can remove the DVD drive and connect your new 2.5" SSD to the SATA 2 (white) port without any issues. Since all three SATA ports should support the same speeds, the SSD will work just like any other SATA drive.

🔧 Things to Check:

  1. BIOS Recognition – After installing the SSD, check your BIOS to confirm it’s detected.
  2. Power Connector – The DVD drive likely uses a SATA power connector, which you can reuse for the SSD. If not, you might need a SATA power splitter.
  3. Mounting the SSD – If the SSD isn’t secured properly in the drive bay, you might consider a 2.5” to 5.25” adapter (if needed).

Let me know if you have any other questions. Hope your upgrade goes smoothly!

Kind Regards,
