@DaveD_MA , welcome to the forum.

If you haven't already done so, you should update the Firmware for the drive.  If this doesn't solve your problem, go into Device Manager (right click on Start (Windows logo and select Device Manager from the list)/Disk drives/right click on the DVD drive/select Uninstall device and reboot.  Win 10 will automatically reinstall the drive.  If this doesn't work it may be a failed drive.

Please click the Thumbs up + button if I have helped you and click Accept as Solution if your problem is solved.

I updated the firmware a few days ago, and tried the uninstall the disc and rebooting, a couple of times with no results. Thanks for the suggestions.

You are welcome, @DaveD_MA !

Here is the Troubleshooting section for the computer.  Select the CD, DVD or Blu-ray drives section from the box.  It may have some help for you.

The troubleshooting site has been down for the last 4 days.

I suggest trying a different browser to see if that makes a difference.  I was having problems with Firefox and that is what solved the problem for me.

I was able to get to the troubleshooting link with another browser. I downloaded and ran a couple of diagnostic tests, but there is no response from the cd drive, other than being able to remove and reinstall it. If I need to order a replacement cd drive, do you know if it is right through the hp.com site?

@DaveD_MA, glad that you were able to run the diagnostics.

I checked HP Partsurfer and HP is no longer selling the drive.  However, you can get the part # from the parts list in the link that I provided.  I would like to suggest that you consider a USB CD/DVD/Blu-ray drive.  It saves adding a component inside the case.  I have been using a USB drive for years.  It works well with my laptop, also.

I burn lots of CD and DVDs, is there a particular external drive that you recommend?

The drive that I have is only a CD/DVD and is made by ASUS.  Here is a link to a page on Amazon that has several different brands to choose from.  Read the reviews to see what users have to say about them.
