HP Slimline Desktop 260-P026 Hums Loudly

Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I purchased this slimline tower in December and right out of the box it started humming fairly loudly.  The humming stopped for a while and now it's back.  It's intermittant, but it seems to be happening more often--a few times per hour.  I don't know if this is a hardware problem that I need to have HP fix or just something that is normal.  Can anyone shed light on it please?

For better clarity and to assist you better, I would require more information regarding this.

  • Is the noise closer to where the power supply or processor fans are located.?
  • Does the computer overheat and freeze by any chance?
  • Is it a noise that could be from the hard drive of the computer like a clicking noise?
  • Is the noise from the speaker?

For now, please update the bios from this link: http://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/HP-Slimline-200-Desktop-PC-series/10734583/model/117...

 

Please follow the on-screen instructions. Please check again if the noise quiets down.

 

If it does not, then please follow all the prescribed steps from this link: http://support.hp.com/us-en/product/HP-Slimline-200-Desktop-PC-series/10734583/model/11715680/docume...   and check if the situation is corrected.

If it is not corrected, then please contact HP phone support to get the unit serviced.

 

Step 1. Open link: www.hp.com/contacthp/

Step 2. Enter Product number or select to auto detect

Step 3. Scroll down to "Still need help? Complete the form to select your contact options"

Step 4. Scroll down and click: HP contact options - click on Get phone number, Case number and phone number appear.

They will be happy to assist you immediately.

If the unit is under warranty, the manufacturer’s warranty should take care of it for you.

Hi, thanks for your response.  Really appreciate it.

 

My BIOS was already up to date and there was no dust in my unit.  Since I checked the BIOS and checked for dust, I have not had the humming sound come back to determine where it may be coming from.  I don't think it's the drive, but am not positive.  I will have to wait until the noise happens again and then report back to you.  See, I told you it was intermittent.  🙂  Thanks again.

Thanks for the reply, please do observe the computer and keep me posted. To make sure all the components are working correctly, run an extensive test on the computer (it takes a long time 3-4 hours) Click here for assistance.

Hi,  I just bought the same computer 1/2/2018 and the second day it started humming.  Did you ever find the answer??

 Hi Louie83.  HP told me to do all of the updates on their website, but after doing so I got the same humming.  About 3 months later it mostly stopped.  Humming comes and goes but it's not as bad as it was initially.  So I just live with it.  Sorry I didn't have a better answer for you.
