Hp z620 does not work with more than 1 drive

ok, I have a used z620 workstation, I have a hdd installed and want to install another, but when I install another (whether it be hotswap or powering off and plugging drive in) the drive does not show up. I have tested all my sata ports and caddy ports and know that the drives function. sometimes when I plug the drive in it bluescreens and still does not show up. the extra drive also don't show up in the bios. I am planning on merging over to this pc and need to have more than one drive.
