Welcome to our HP community forum!
I would guess that you could almost certainly upgrade to an i7-4790K -this bad boy is aptly called "Devil's Canyon", as I did with my HP EliteDesk 800 G1 TWR upgrade project: Solved: Upgrading an HP EliteDesk 800 G1 TWR - HP Support Community - 8851089.
But let's dispense with the guessing, and please tell me what model desktop we are talking about so that I can give you a definitive answer.
Kind Regards,
