Microsoft Windows 11

I am trying to find out how, when shopping for a new desktop computer, I can determine the maximum amount of RAM a particular unit is capable of handling. For instance, if a computer is listed as having 8gb of DDR4 ram, am I able to upgrade to 16gb or 32?  Again, I am not trying to upgrade a currently owned computer, but to find out capabilities of new ones I am shopping online.  Thanks for any help.

@Garbanzofoote,

Welcome to our HP community forum!

That is a really good question. Here is one approach that has worked well for me. Say, you wanted to buy this HP desktop via Costco. Mind you, I am not advertising anything, this is just a consumer purchase example, nothing more, nothing less.

This desktop is an HP Pavilion Desktop TP01-2137c and is fitted with 12GB of RAM (one 8GB and one 4GB RAM stick) :

It needs to be said that 12GB of RAM is cutting it short: you should have at least 2 x 8GB of RAM -but I digress.

Using your favorite browser, copy/paste "HP Pavilion Desktop TP01-2137c" in your search bar, and type "Crucial" at the end, like so:

Click on the Crucial link, and in this example, you can see that this particular desktop could be fitted with up to 2 x 32GB of DDR4 PC4-25600, 3200 MHz, Non-ECC, Unbuffered, DIMM (UDIMM), 288-pin RAM sticks:

Again, I am not advertising Crucial, it just so happens that Crucial is very accurate (almost always anyway) and it is a very helpful utility tool to figure out how much RAM a particular PC can be fitted with.

Hope this was helpful.

Kind Regards,
