Installing ATX PSU instead of Proprietary PSU

I am trying install a more powerful PSU in my HP 690-0013w.  The stock PSU (part # 937516-004) has two 4-pin connectors: one with 2 12v brown wires and two black grounds.  This goes to the CPU power on the motherboard. The other 4-pin has two 12v yellow wires and two black grounds.  This goes to the motherboard power.  There's also a small connector with 3 wires, one black ground, one gray 12v wire and a green 3.3v wire.  I took out this power supply and connected a ATX power supply and shorted the green wire so it would always be on.  Connected all the proper voltage wires: 12v to the brown, yellow and gray wires, Orange 3.3v to the green into the motherboard and all grounds.  The new PSU turns on like it should but the pc doesn't come on when i push the on button.  The only thing that happens it the CPU fan turns on for a split second when I turn on the power supply.  I made sure that the new PSU could handle this load on the 12v rails (it's rated at 700w).  Why doesn't it turn on with the new power supply?

The use of the HP proprietary PSU is a given.

We are volunteers, and shall not discuss hacking of hardware.  It is a decision backed up by HP.

Change the original product state its not recommended by HP, can cause some problems to the product and the customer. Therefore we will blocked this thread.
