OMEN by HP Desktop PC 880-101na
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I've bought a new 500GB m.2 SSD which i'm wanting to set as primary and install the OS.

Trouble I'm having is:

  • The bios settings don't show the option to set m.2 as main boot source
  • Its not showing up in bios
  • Its not showing in Windows (disk partition)

I've also updated BIOS to the newest version.

Is this M.2 NVMe disk that you bought SATA or PCI-E?

My bet is on the former, whereas you MoBo does likely support booting only from the latter.

Its the image above, replacing it with the Intel Optane stick that's already in, it also doesn't support NVMe as you can see.

Added image again as i'm guessing it got removed due to it showing serial number etc.

Thanks - yeah, images need approving. Or are rejected for the reasons you mentioned.

Your MX500 SSD is SATA M.2 SSD - as it says on the tin. And it won't work - you need PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD.

As my worthy colleague @Grzwacz mentioned in the other thread I linked:

Your motherboard (MB) has a Key M M.2 slot. HP only supports PCIe NVME protocol in this slot.

A SATA M.2 drive will not work.

More information about these standards could be found (for example) here:

@AidySmith,

Strange, the specs do not reference an Optane module (these are 16GB or 32GB).

Back up your data files.

If your removing an Optane SSD you need to read these instructions

You just can not pop out an Optane memory module and respect the computer to boot.

The only reason I bought the SATA M.2 SSD is I showed the Intel Optane m.2 stick to another online computer parts business and they said the slot on my motherboard would not be compatible with an NVMe M.2 SSD ?
