I have an HP laptop and my son changed the pin and now forgets what he changed it to. There is a prompt that says Forgot Pin but does nothing when I click on it.  Any suggestions how to reset and get into this laptop?

Thank you

Hi @LoStracco

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand how worrying it feels to be locked out of your laptop because the PIN was changed and forgotten. You’ve already tried the “Forgot PIN” option, so let’s go through other ways to regain access.

Steps to reset and get back in

1. Sign in with your Microsoft account password

  • On the login screen, select Sign-in options.
  • Choose the key icon to switch from PIN to password.
  • Enter the Microsoft account password linked to the laptop.
  • If you don’t remember the password, reset it online here:
    Microsoft Account Password Reset

2. Use another sign-in option

  • If you set up a local account, try the password instead of the PIN.
  • If you set up Windows Hello (fingerprint or face recognition), use that to log in.

3. Reset PIN after login

  • Once you’re signed in with the password, go to Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options.
  • Under PIN (Windows Hello), select Remove and then Set up a new PIN.

4. If password is also forgotten

  • Boot to the login screen.
  • Select I forgot my password.
  • Follow the prompts to reset via your Microsoft account recovery.
  • After resetting, use the new password to log in, then set a new PIN.

5. Safe Mode option

  • Hold Shift and click Restart from the login screen.
  • Go to Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
  • Press 4 for Safe Mode.
  • In Safe Mode, try logging in with the password.
  • Once inside, you can reset the PIN from Settings.

The quickest way back in is to use the Microsoft account password or reset it online, then remove and recreate the PIN once logged in.
