Hi @Birdybum59,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your HP desktop is stuck at the sign-in screen, and the keyboard shows “hidden” letters, likely because Narrator or On-Screen Keyboard is active, or Filter Keys/Sticky Keys settings are interfering. Here’s how to fix this:

Steps to Resolve Keyboard Input Issues at Sign-In

1. Turn Off Narrator or Screen Reader

  • Press Ctrl + Windows + Enter to toggle Narrator OFF.
  • If you see an accessibility icon on the sign-in screen, click it and turn off Narrator and On-Screen Keyboard.

2. Disable On-Screen Keyboard

  • On the sign-in screen, click the Ease of Access icon (bottom-right).
  • Uncheck On-Screen Keyboard.

3. Check for Filter Keys

  • If keys seem unresponsive or delayed:
    • Press the Shift key 5 times to toggle Sticky Keys OFF.
    • Press and hold Right Shift for 8 seconds to disable Filter Keys.

4. Try an External Keyboard

  • Plug in a USB keyboard to bypass any hardware issue with the built-in keyboard.

5. Boot into Safe Mode

  • Restart your PC.
  • Press F11 or Shift + RestartTroubleshoot > Advanced Options > Startup Settings > Enable Safe Mode.
  • Log in and adjust keyboard settings under Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard.

6. If Still Stuck

  • Perform a hard reset
    • Power off the PC.
    • Disconnect power for 30 seconds.
    • Restart and try again.
