Welcome to the HP Forum.
Your MB should be able to do an NVME drive as a storage device using a PCIe to M.2 adapter. Use one of your MB's PCIe x4 or greater PCIe slots.
The BIOS would not support an NVME boot drive since the MB does not natively support M.2 drives.
Some folks have used "Clover" to get around the boot drive roadblock on older MBs. I have never tried Clover so I cannot give it a two thumbs up.
