I'm wanting to add a good, fast SSD to my system. I've seen some posts about PCI - based SSD cards but wanted to know if they were a viable option. I don't want to break the bank on this, so I'm just looking for a speedy 1TB drive that is compatible with my motherboard.

In order to have fast, you need a PCIEx4 slot. You only have 2 slots, the GPU (4,8,16) and a PCIEx1.

Yes the 2.5" SSD will be faster, as discussed at length in this article.
PS<> I only use Samsung.
My new build has a 500GB M.2 PCIE main with 4x 2.5" SSD drives acting as sequential clones.
Gave away over 20x1TB 3.5" Seagate Drives.
