Would like to install an NVMe SSD in the PCIe slot. Is it compatible with this model of Desktop? Would it work as a boot drive also? Thank you for your help!

The only HP550 model I could find (your unit is circa 2015) was this motherboard. Is this your motherboard, the Odense? It would not support an NMMe SSD, as that smaller slot is PCIEx1.

Hello Wb2001,
Thank you for your response. The ID number printed on the motherboard is IPM17-(either)DD, DO, or OD (can't tell) Rev. 1.04. There is another label near the edge of the motherboard that lists a part number of: AS# 799929-001 REV 0A. There is a PCIEx1 near the wireless adapter card, but I also have a PCIEx16 slot on the motherboard. Any additional info would be appreciated!
The desktop is a Pavilion 550-177c, Intel Core i7-6700 CPU @ 3.4 GHz per Settings>System>About.
