My Pavilion 550-150 desktop seems to have a dead power supply (PSU).  I called HP and they said they have no replacements for it!  This is absurd, IMHO, because:

1.  It  seems pretty stupid to use a proprietary PSU in the first place. Why? Just to force me to buy a replacement from HP?

2. The original PSU is only a feeble180 watts.

I found a vendor on ebay that claims to have designed a PSU for my PC, but it arrived DOA. Now what -- trash a perfectly good (albeit older)  PC because HP doesn't stock a replacement part? Also, I see that HP is still using 180 watt PSUs in their current PCs, although they're now called "Gold." Will these work in my 550-150?  I don't know.
