I need to replace the existing internal SSD hard drive (the boot drive, containing the C: volume) with a new one.  How can I  get a clone of the existing hard drive data onto the new drive, before unplugging the existing drive, and plugging in the new one?

I normally do:

(a) Mount new SSD to an enclosure or adapter; for example

           https://www.msy.com.au/25-hdd-enclosure

(b) Use free software to clone

           https://www.techradar.com/au/best/best-disk-cloning-software

(c) Physically remove old one and install new one.

Did you install SSD to your machine ? Its specs does not say anything about SSD
