Unless you have software that is designed specifically for an RS232 chipset, I recommend you get a USB to RS232 adapter
There are distance limits with RS232 especially with higher baud rates. If you are measuring temperature or controlling a process in a sealed room (chemical or hazardous area), I recommend a balanced line like RS422 which can run much longer and at higher speeds and can connect to RS232 with inexpensive adapters and sometimes that is not even needed. Balanced line is immune to most interference unlike RS232
