Omen 870-210
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi, I'm upgrading my CPU and I could use some information.

I have an Omen 870-210 here is a link https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/omen-by-hp-870-200/13687063/document/c05380402/

And I plan on upgrading my CPU, at the moment I have a i3-7100 and I'm upgrading to a i5-7400.

The question I have is before I install my new CPU will I have to update the bios or will I be able to just go ahead and install without doing anything before, and if I have to update the bios could I get some info on how I should update the bios.

Thanks

@ledzep1,

Thanks for stopping by the HP Support Forums.  After reading your post I understand that you need assistance with processor upgrades and bios updates. It will be a delight to assist you here.

Superb analysis and brilliant diagnosis of the issue before posting. Kudos to you on that score. 🙂

For better clarity and to assist you better I would require more information regarding this:

  • Did you check with any local technician in this regard?

For now, check this information:

  • Product Speculations:http://hp.care/2ozrEar  (OMEN by HP Desktop PC - 870-210 Product Specifications that you have already researched and pasted.)
  • Motherboard specifications: http://hp.care/2tCRm16(HP Desktop PCs - motherboard specifications, Thimphu-K)
  • Service and upgrade guide: http://hp.care/2EVGKAZ

  • Right now To answer your question, please update the bios first and then install the processor. That will keep you in good stead as the bios always enhances and provides the required support to recognize the latest components.
  • It is a prerequisite to first upgrade the bios and then upgrade the hardware for it work correctly.
  • If you already have the latest bios version, then the bios update will not be necessary.
  • To update the bios and other drivers, please run HP support assistant and it will detect the updates and install it on the computer if it is found.

  • Otherwise, you could visit this link: http://hp.care/2oxmhs7 and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • This is the latest bios version for this product:
  • HP Consumer Desktop PC BIOS Update (ROM Family SSID 2B4B)

    A0.57 Rev.A15.8 MBAug 17, 2017h

  • Later on, you could upgrade the processor. THat is the best route to take.

  • Please note that HP does not recommend upgrading either the operating system or the computer’s hardware as the components that were initially installed with the unit are certified by HP for optimal performance. However, as you are very technically inclined, I would still request you to consult a local technician like Best Buy or Staples before proceeding to upgrade the unit.
  • So please contact a local Best Buy or staples technician and perform the upgrade so that there are no compatibility issues with the computer and everything works smoothly.

Please perform all these steps patiently as it is critical to resolving the issue. Going by your technical expertise and competence I am sure you will be able to perform these steps without breaking a sweat.

Let me know how it goes and you have a great day!

To simply say thanks, please click the "Thumbs Up" button to give me a Kudos to appreciate my efforts to help. If this helps, please mark this as Accepted Solution” as it will help several others with the same issue to get it resolved without hassles.

Take care and have a blessed week ahead. 🙂

Sorry for not replying weirdest thing I opened up the cause turns out its a lga1150 with a i3-7100 but what I have read online is that the 7100 is a 1151, not a 1150 anyways thanks for the help I'm just going to get a new motherboard and case and move away from the hp limitations.
