HP Pavilion Desktop PC TP01-3000i (4M0K0AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

Two or Three times a week, my Pavillion Desktop TP01-3xxx will just power down.  There is nothing I can find in the operating system that is causing this.  It just shuts down during idle time.  Can someone provide answers for this issue.

Thanks,

Dennis

Hi @drcsue,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Random shutdowns on a Pavilion Desktop could be caused by various factors, both hardware and software-related. Here are some steps you can take to diagnose and potentially resolve the issue.

  • Check for Overheating: Overheating is a common cause of unexpected shutdowns. Ensure that the computer's vents are clear of dust and debris, and that the fans are functioning properly. You can use software utilities to monitor the temperature of your CPU and GPU to see if overheating is occurring before shutdowns happen.
  • Power Supply Issues: A failing or insufficient power supply can also cause sudden shutdowns. Check if the power supply unit (PSU) is providing enough power for all components, especially if you've recently added new hardware. You may need to replace the PSU if it's failing.
  • Hardware Diagnostics: Use built-in hardware diagnostic tools provided by HP to check for any hardware issues. These diagnostics can help identify problems with components such as the CPU, RAM, or hard drive.
  • Update Drivers and Firmware: Ensure that all device drivers and firmware are up to date. Sometimes outdated drivers can cause compatibility issues leading to system instability.
  • Check Event Viewer: Look into the Event Viewer in Windows to see if there are any error messages or warnings logged just before the shutdowns occur. This can provide clues about what might be causing the issue.
  • Disable Sleep and Hibernate: Temporarily disable sleep and hibernate modes to see if the shutdowns still occur. If they stop, it could indicate a problem with the power management settings or drivers related to these features.
  • Scan for Malware: Malware infections can sometimes cause unexpected behavior, including system shutdowns. Run a thorough scan with a reputable antivirus or antimalware program to check for any malicious software.
  • Check Power Settings: Ensure that the power settings in Windows are configured correctly and that there are no conflicts or issues with power management settings.
  • Check for Loose Connections: Make sure all internal and external connections (e.g., power cables, data cables, RAM modules) are securely seated. Loose connections can sometimes cause intermittent issues.
  • Test in Safe Mode: Boot the computer into Safe Mode and see if the shutdowns still occur. If they don't, it could indicate that a third-party program or driver is causing the problem.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
